Trauma has a form:
The Trauma Phenotype Model

1. The Core Vision: Trauma as Structural Code

The central premise of this theory is that trauma is not an abstract or invisible phenomenon, but takes on a specific form within a person's life. That form can be 'captured' and translated into a unique, readable code: the Trauma Phenotype.

The model's purpose is twofold:

  1. Societal: Raising global trauma awareness by breaking the taboo around trauma and making it part of everyday conversation. Explicit care is taken to avoid casting anyone in a victim role; this is about insight, not labelling.

  2. Scientific: Providing a structured tool through which big data and AI can uncover deep correlations—linking trauma phenotypes to (severe) somatic conditions, the most effective therapies, and even to 'normal', non-problematic personality traits.

2. The Anatomy of the Trauma Phenotype

The phenotype works like a 'barcode' or 'QR code' of a person's unique trauma history, built from 26 letters and 10 digits. Why 26 letters and 10 digits, and not more, or fewer? Because we feel we 'have to start somewhere'. A model 'is just a model', and we wanted to use a manageable number of variables that also have their roots in a recognizable aspect of our nature: namely the alphabet and the numeric system. Is this arbitrary? Yes, completely! But, again, it seemed to us a good beginning.

A through Z: The Determinants (The Drivers)

The letters form the basis of the code and stand for scientifically recognized factors associated with trauma.

  • Systematic: Each letter represents a specific driver. For example: 'A' for Addiction in caregivers, 'B' for Bullying, and 'D' for Divorce.

  • Granularity: The code specifies the source ('m' for mother, 'f' for father) and the severity (scale 1–3). Where a factor is absent, the letter is omitted.

0 through 9: The Coping Mechanisms (The Manifestation)

The digits describe the behavioral patterns or survival strategies that emerged from the determinants.

  • Examples: '0' for intimacy problems, '1' for authority problems, and '2' for social withdrawal.

  • Insight: This reveals the direct link between current behavior (often wrongly seen as merely a 'character trait') and its underlying traumatic roots.

3. Scientific Power and Data Analysis

Because the model systematizes trauma into a code-like structure, it lends itself especially well to large-scale research:

  • Correlational research: By analyzing large volumes of phenotypes, we can recognize patterns. Which specific trauma phenotypes frequently lead to migraine, gut problems, or other unexplained somatic complaints?

  • Optimizing Interventions: AI can help predict which therapy or intervention works best for a specific phenotype, making care more efficient and more personal.

  • Personality Formation: The model looks beyond pathology alone; it also examines how trauma shapes the 'normal' personality, which is essential for a complete picture of a person.

4. Roadmap to the Future

The project strives toward an open, scientifically validated standard:

  • Validation: An invitation to the scientific community to refine the model via an open-source platform (like Wikipedia).

  • Application: A secure digital tool with which individuals can generate their own trauma phenotype, while anonymized data is gathered for scientific research by an independant foundation or NGO.
